Bad new for remanufactured cartridges as a new firmware update from HP has caused HP Printers to report an error when using remanufactured cartridges. This has been reported by a Dutch site selling remanufactured ink cartridges 123inkt which said that they saw a surge in errors on 13 September when over 1,000 customers said that their third-party cartridges no longer worked. This company then carried out an investigation and it was discovered that the end-of-life date was programmed into a firmware update in March 2016. For now, the issue is reported to affect HP OfficeJet family, including the OfficeJet, the OfficeJet Pro and the OfficeJet Pro X. As per HP, the largest Printer Manufacture in the world, the printers will continue to work with refilled or remanufactured cartridges with an original HP security chip however other cartridges may not function. Remanufactured or after-market printer toners or cartridges have gained exceptional popularity due to the low cost which sometimes can be one tenth the cost of original toner.
