Network cabling is generally a connection of computers. A network administrator handles connecting two or more computers safely. Another role of an administrator is to connect different network cables. This way a network can build securely.
If you are willing to know more about the network cabling. Then this post will help with a vast knowledge of the connection of networks.
Introduce yourself to Network Cabling
This is a medium of the interconnection of various cables to make a network. This way a piece of information transferred from one platform to another in a small amount of time. One of the common cable used for communication of computers is LAN. This termed as a local area network. With the help of LAN, computers can share their information from one place to another. Network cabling types are coaxial cable, optical fiber cable & twisted pair cable.
Let us have a look on – Network Cable Types and Specifications
Three network cable types are following;
Coaxial Cable
These cables utilized for the connection of two or more desktops. The main components of coaxial cable are a conductor, an insulator, a braiding, and a sheath. All these components cover each other in decreasing order.
The topmost layer of coaxial cable is the sheath. The sheath then holds the braiding, conductor, and insulation. This is the simple structure of a coaxial cable.
Coaxial cables also have two types. Single-core and multi core coaxial cable. These coaxial cables were in use before the invention of computers. Thus, people were using these cables for their general work and purpose. If there is a time when people are not willing to use these cables for computers. Then also these cables will not be discontinued from the market. Coaxial cables can be used for daily purposes.
These cables are not expensive and easy to use for building the network. In the early times of the ’80s and ’90s, coaxial cables utilized for the connection of computers. People find these cheaper as well as durable.
Optical Fiber Cable
Fiber optic cable contains a different type of objects. It is made up of core, cladding, buffer, and jacket. All these required for making optical fiber cable. The core used for transmitting the data over long-distance.
Fiber optic cable contains a different type of objects. It is made up of core, cladding, buffer, and jacket. All these required for making optical fiber cable. The core used for transmitting the data over long-distance. All these types wrapped one after another.
Core utilizes the form of light for carrying the data signals. Then the next process if of cladding which transmits light again to the core. The next type which is used to make a fiber cable is buffer. This protects the transmission of light from leakage. If in case there will be any physical damage then the jacket handles protecting the fiber cable.
Thus, this complete process makes it simple and handy for use. It is workable for transmitting the signals or data from one place to another. The importance of fiber optic cable is that these used for long-distance data transmission.
Fiber cables send the data at the highest speed. This can send signals at 100Gbps speed at 40 kilometers of long-distance.
There are two types of fiber optical cable. Let us discuss the same.
- Single-mode fiber
Single-mode fiber is more reliable in working. As per its name, only a single beam of light carried in this cable. This cable supports the greater bandwidth as well as extensive distances. - Multi-mode fiber
This is another type of fiber optic cable. SMF is more reliable than MMF as this contains many beam of light. But the important point with this cable is that it contains a vast amount of data than SMF cable. These cables are not used for larger distances while this works well with a small distance.
Twisted Pair Cable
Computer networks were in need of some cables for communication and connectivity. Thus, these twisted pair cables were introduced. The tested pair cable is also called as an Ethernet cable. These cables are widely used in any of the organizations small or large. Even these cables used in home locations as well.
These cables structured with the help of the color-coding concept.
It consists of four colored wire pairs. The wires which use in this twisted pair cable made up of insulated copper wires. One wire is solid in color while the other wire is completely stripped.
A network administrator knows how to join this wire for connectivity of computers.
Twisted pair cables consist of four colors. Solid and striped wires recognized by these four colors. Blue, brown, orange, and green are solid colors. Also with the striped wires these colors used.
UTP and STP are two types of cables that are used for connectivity with desktops.
UTP is the unshielded twisted pair cable. The pair of cable is covered with only one plastic sheath.
While the other one is named as Shielded twisted pair cable. This cable is more protective than the UTP. These cables have an additional layer of the metal shield. Once the pair created then that is covered with an outer plastic sheath.
Some importance and differences between both the Twisted Pair Cables:
STP and UTP cables help for data transmission. The speed of transferring the data is 20 Mbps, 100 Mbps, 1 Gbps, and 10 Gbps.
- STP twisted pair cables cost more than that of the UTP cable.
- Both the cables use connectors and the most common of them is RJ-45 known as registered jack.
- UTP cables do not make noise as STP cables do.
- STP cables are EMI resistant.
- Both the cables hold the length up to 100 meters
- There are 1024 nodes utilized in both the cables segment.
The above points clearly explain the network cabling. The usage of the same in the computer field. How cables created for transmission of data in longer distances. At what speed the cables can send the data. Different specifications of network cabling in communication terms.
